Eight-note major scales with a chromatic ♯5, all twelve keys
A regular major scale has seven notes per octave; in 4/4
eighth notes, the chord tones land on the off-beats half the
time. The bebop scale fixes this by adding one
chromatic passing tone — for the major bebop, that's the
♯5 between 5 and 6. Now you have eight notes
per octave, which divides evenly into eighth notes, and the
1-3-5-6 chord tones — the notes of the I6 chord — land on
beats 1-2-3-4 every time. (The major 7 lands on the last upbeat,
a passing tone into the octave.)
This is the language Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Dizzy
Gillespie, and every bebop player after them spoke. The
chromatic passing tone is what makes a phrase "sound bebop":
not the scale itself, but the alignment between scale and
meter. Ascending and descending — they're not symmetric
melodically, but both are foundational vocabulary.
