Lydian Augmented

Lydian augmented is the 3rd mode of melodic minor. Take lydian (major with ♯4), then raise the 5 to ♯5 as well. C lyd aug: C D E F♯ G♯ A B C. Two altered tones at once gives the scale a hovering, mysterious quality — the only consonant interval to the root is the 3.

Use it over maj7♯5 chords (sometimes written +maj7). The natural 7 keeps the major quality; the ♯5 replaces the chord's 5; the ♯4 sits as an upper extension. The sound is brighter than lydian, less functional, and was a Wayne Shorter / Herbie Hancock signature in the mid-1960s.
