LH walks 1–3–5–8, RH stabs rootless chord on 2 and 4

The hands divide labour: the left walks the bass in quarter notes (root, 3rd, 5th, octave — the chord stretched out as a line), and the right comps on beats 2 and 4 with the rootless A/B-form voicing, resting on beats 1 and 3 so the bass line breathes. This is what a pianist does in a duo (no bass player) — cover both functions at once.

The 1–3–5–8 shape is the simplest walking line: the chord tones stacked in order. Real walking bass is improvisational, with chromatic approaches and passing tones; this is the skeleton. Once it's automatic, swap in approach tones on beat 4 — for example, instead of returning to the octave, play a half-step below the next chord's root.

Why beats 2 and 4

Hitting beats 1 and 3 doubles the bass and stomps on the downbeats — heavy, square, anti-swing. Hitting 2 and 4 (where the drummer puts the hi-hat or the snare) pushes against the bass, which is what makes the groove float. The rests are not absence of music; they're the part where the rhythm section breathes.
